Yayoi Kusama is an Avant-Garde artist who more completely in polka dots. Since the early age of 10, Kusama has suffered from mental health problems. She currently resides in a mental hospital in Tokyo to receive help with her hallucinations and nervous disorders. Art for her is a release and treatment for her mental illnesses. Her hallucinations are recorded on the page through the polka dots and patterns she paints. For her, it is a sense of relief and possibly a way for her to fight her own disabilities.
Kusama works in sculptures, paintings, fashion, and more. Although not directly effecting others, Kusama works to bring down the stigma that is mental illness and show that there are ways of coping. For her, it is the expression on the page that relieves the symptoms, if only for a moment.
